Van Dyke Brown

John Frederick William Herschel – 1842

The Van Dyke process, a simplified version of Kallitype, was named for its tonal similarity to the Van Dyke brown used in painting. Unlike Kallitype, the prints are developed in water. The Van Dyke process could be considered the silver-based equivalent of cyanotype.
